Short Synopsis:

Jet Li portrays Chen Zhen, a student of the Jing Mun Martial Arts school in Shanghai. This may sound familiar if one has seen Bruce Lee's movie "Fist of Fury", also entitled "The Chinese Connection."  Fist of Legend is a remake of this martial arts classic. Fist of Legend is a remake but in many ways it is also a different movie all together. New characters, inter winding plots and political intrigue. The fighting style in the movie is excellent. The movie is set in the 1920's, and the fighting style to suits the era. The way that Jet Li hops back and forth and keeps his fists up is actually the correct form of Chinese sparring, let alone any kind of sparring that includes striking attacks. It is also interesting to observe the contrast between Jet Li's traditional fighting. Fist of Legend neatly settles in between these two extremes, get the best of both worlds as one would say. The people that complain about Jet Li's "American Boxing" have to realize that Fist of Legend is a more realistic movie than his "Once Upon a Time in China" movies. Jet Li was aiming for more of a Bruce Lee fighting style, hoping back and forth, fists up, every shot counts, etc. In terms of story, the writers did a wonderful job in taking the core elements of the original story and adding interesting characters and outer conflicts. Also there was great acting from everyone in the movie. Chen Zhen had weaknesses in the movie which added suspense and realism to the movie. If anyone wants to see something different for a change, this is your movie. All in all, a topnotch Jet Li film that anyone should see that is interested in martial arts flicks. The best way to get the full effect of the movie one should also see "Fist of Fury" also known as "The Chinese Connection" featuring Bruce Lee to really understand the motivating force behind Fist of Legend.
